How De-Addiction Treatment Works — Step by Step

Many families delay treatment simply because they do not know what happens inside — “will they tie him up”? Here is the whole process in simple words, so that information replaces fear. First things first: treatment does not always mean admission — many people recover as outpatients (OPD), visiting from home.

Doctor — assessment and guidance for de-addiction treatment

The 8 steps of treatment

1. First contact — A phone call or an OPD visit. Your identity stays confidential. This is where the plan begins — nothing more, no paperwork maze.

2. Assessment — Which substance, for how long, how much, past attempts to quit, home and work situation — speak openly; the right plan depends on it.

3. Medical check-up — Physical examination (liver, BP etc.) and mental health screening — sleep, depression, anxiety. In more than half of all cases a mental health issue runs alongside addiction, and both must be treated together.

4. Treatment plan — Every person gets a different plan. The doctor decides whether OPD (living at home) is enough or admission (IPD) is needed. Not everyone needs admission.

5. Detoxification — Medicines keep the withdrawal (craving, restlessness, body pain) under control — usually 4 to 14 days. Important: do not stop alcohol or sleeping pills suddenly at home — seizures are possible; detox is safe only under medical supervision.

6. Counselling — The real treatment happens here — handling cravings, recognising triggers, changing thought patterns and habits. Family counselling runs alongside, because recovery is incomplete if the home environment does not change.

7. Rehabilitation — Routine, work, new company, rebuilding trust in the family. Where needed, residential rehab — a few structured weeks or months to relearn normal life.

8. Follow-up — Regular visits for 6-12 months after discharge — this is what prevents relapse. The doctor tapers medicines gradually; never stop them on your own.

How long does it take?

Detox usually 4-14 days · admission (when needed) 1-3 months · follow-up 6-12 months. Addiction is a long-term illness like BP or diabetes — it is fully manageable with proper treatment, but anyone promising a “guaranteed cure in one week” is either ignorant or lying.

How much does it cost?

Government centres treat free of cost or at nominal charges. If you choose a private centre, ask for a written rate list and list of facilities first.

3 firm rules about medicines

  • De-addiction medicines only under a qualified doctor — dose and duration are the doctor’s call.
  • Do not rely on bazaar “desi dawa” or herbal mixtures of unknown content — many contain harmful substances.
  • Do not stop medicines yourself the moment things improve — that is the most common cause of relapse.

🚨 Emergency: Seizures, unconsciousness, severe tremors with fever during withdrawal, or slow breathing / blue lips (overdose) — call 108 immediately. Hospital first, everything else later.
