Straight answers to the questions families ask us most often about de-addiction treatment in India. Tap a question to read the answer.
Does addiction treatment really work?
Yes. Addiction is a treatable brain illness, like BP or diabetes. With proper medical treatment, counselling and family support, lakhs of people in India live normal lives after quitting. Relapse can happen — it means the treatment plan needs adjustment, not that treatment failed.
How long does treatment take?
Detox is usually 4-14 days. Admission, when needed, is commonly 1-3 months. After that, follow-up visits for 6-12 months prevent relapse. Be cautious of anyone promising a “guaranteed cure in 7 days”.
How much does it cost?
At government de-addiction centres treatment is free or nearly free. Private centres charge varying amounts — always ask for a written rate list first. Find free government facilities through our centre directory.
Will my name and information stay confidential?
Yes. Medical confidentiality applies to addiction treatment. On this website too, you can search centres and read everything without any login or registration.
Is admission (bharti) always necessary?
No. Many people are treated as outpatients (OPD), living at home. The doctor decides based on the substance, duration and overall condition. Alcohol and sleeping-pill dependence often need supervised detox because sudden stopping can cause seizures.
Can we treat addiction at home by ourselves?
Home “detox” without medical guidance is risky — alcohol and sedative withdrawal can cause fits, and opioid users who quit and relapse face high overdose risk. Start with a doctor visit; much of the treatment can then happen from home under guidance.
The person refuses treatment. Can we force them?
Forced admission of an adult is not the legal route, and “pickup” services that lift people forcibly can be unlawful and abusive — avoid them. Consent matters. Families can still begin: counselling for the family works even before the patient agrees, and often brings them to treatment. In severe situations (danger to self or others), consult a psychiatrist about lawful options under the Mental Healthcare Act 2017.
What if relapse happens after treatment?
Relapse is common in recovery — it is a signal to restart or adjust treatment, not a reason for shame. Contact the treating doctor or centre again promptly. Families should respond with firmness about treatment, not taunts.
Are the “desi dawa” or secret herbal cures advertised everywhere genuine?
Be very careful. Many contain undisclosed sedatives or harmful substances, and “100% guaranteed cure” claims are illegal under Indian advertising law. There is no secret medicine for addiction — evidence-based treatment through qualified doctors is the reliable path.
How do I find a genuine centre near me?
Use our directory of 984 centres across India — select your state and district. Government-listed centres are marked. Before admission anywhere, visit in person, ask for the licence/registration, written rates, and whether a qualified doctor supervises treatment.
